About this work
The canvas is filled with vertical wooden boards of varying width, grain and staining, crossed by a grey diagonal beam running from lower left to upper right and a second grey board lying horizontally near the bottom. No glass, sky or interior is visible, suggesting a window shuttered or boarded over rather than opened onto a view.
Ochre, tan, grey and small stains of yellow and pink build a thickly textured surface that mimics real wood grain, knots and peeling paint. The closed, opaque composition and muted tones give the panel a somber, shut-off mood, more a study of a barrier than of light.
