About this work

A single leafless tree, trunk twisted hard to one side, grows from a stacked woodpile beside a low stone wall, both dusted with snow. Behind it runs a wall of cordwood along a snowbound ridge, with a strip of pale turquoise water at lower left and dark hills on the horizon.

Cold greys, blue-greens and whites dominate, the sky worked in soft, dragged strokes suggesting wind in motion. Snow is built up in thick, textured passages against the fine tangle of bare branches, giving a stark, isolated mood of quiet endurance.
