About this work

The composition shows a woman seen from the side and back, her bare torso turned away, head bowed low as if in sorrow or thought. Loose hair is crowned with a tangle of pink, yellow, and blue flowers, and one arm rests on a chair back heaped with the same blooms.

Thick palette-knife impasto builds the flowers into raised ridges of pure color against smooth, warm beige-pink skin and a flat sandy backdrop. The heavy sculptural texture and muted, sun-warmed palette lend the bowed figure a brooding, introspective mood.
