About this work
A rutted farm track runs straight from the foreground to a low horizon, forking into twin pale ruts worn into the earth; dry golden-brown grass fields spread on either side, and two leaning wooden utility poles with sagging wires stand beside the road, silhouetted against a flat, overcast sky.
Rendered in a restrained palette of straw yellow, brown and cool gray, the composition is spare and symmetrical, with fine, textured brushwork describing the grass and smooth, flat paint in the sky; the empty, receding road and muted light give the picture a quiet, melancholic stillness.
