About this work
A cloaked figure crouches low, arms wrapped around drawn-up knees and head bowed onto a forearm, beside an oversized earthenware jug with a long curved spout. A small turquoise bowl with dark liquid sits on the ground in front of them, and the sparse setting suggests a bare, sunbaked interior or courtyard.
The whole surface is worked in hot oranges, reds and browns, applied in broad, rough strokes that leave the canvas texture visible throughout. Only the turquoise bowl and a few teal accents on the sleeve break the otherwise monochrome fire-lit palette. Forms are simplified and slightly distorted, and the heavy, expressive brushwork gives the image a raw, brooding intensity.
