Vesuvius

A pale, ridged arch-like form curves at lower left above a dark cavity, while tall vertical white columns rise at right, streaked and dripping with vivid orange-red and touches of blue. A flat grey field spotted with small round marks fills the upper portion, sitting above the textured lower mass like an open sky over eroded ground.

The palette contrasts cool grey and bone white against hot orange-red streaks that appear to run and pool down the vertical forms, built up with heavy, cracked impasto. Light is flat and even across the upper grey field but raking and dramatic across the sculpted ridges below. The dripping red against pale stone-like shapes suggests something molten breaking through solid rock, charged and volatile.
