About this work
Three women in eighteenth-century court dress occupy the foreground: one at left holds a painted fan beside a spotted spaniel, the central figure in a cream-and-gold gown presses a finger to her lips with a small blue bird perched on her sash, and a third in white plays a violin. Formal gardens, a fountain and a palace facade recede on either side, framed by roses, iris and lilac.
Color is rich and saturated - crimson drapery, gold brocade, turquoise accents - painted with crisp, polished realism in the figures and flatter, patterned handling in the flowers bordering the scene. Fabrics and blossoms receive equal, decorative precision. The coy, conspiratorial gesture and theatrical staging give the whole a playful, storybook air.
