About this work

The open doorway of a wooden veranda frames a view of a single birch trunk and a snow-covered garden sloping to a frozen river. A carved corner post and railing stand at right, ski poles lean against the rail, and a magpie stands on the threshold floorboards near a round tree guard.

Warm brown wood tones frame the cooler greys and whites of the winter view beyond, painted with broad, direct strokes and visible texture in the floor and snow. The open door creates a strong sense of looking out from shelter into the crisp, still cold, echoing the companion view of the same veranda.
