Verandah

A corner of a wooden veranda opens onto a snow-covered garden and a frozen river beyond the trees. A turned, carved post anchors the railing at right while bare birches and aspens rise through the balustrade toward a pale sky. A magpie perches on the rail beside the post, and a small birdhouse hangs among the branches at left.

The palette stays cool and restrained, greys, lavender blues and chalky whites for snow and sky against warm ochre-brown wood. Paint is laid in broad, direct strokes with visible brush marks across the floorboards and railing, giving the scene an unforced, plein-air immediacy and a hushed wintry calm.
