About this work
A gondola glides down a broad canal past a row of striped mooring poles in the foreground. Two figures stand in the boat, one poling it forward, while sunlit facades in ochre, pink and white line both banks and a great church dome rises above the rooftops in the distance. A wooden jetty and a leafy tree frame the view at right.
Blue-grey water contrasts with the warm, sunlit stonework, painted in quick, confident strokes that suggest rather than describe architectural detail. The high daylight and lively brushwork give the canal a bright, animated feel, capturing the everyday bustle of the waterway rather than a still postcard view.
