About this work

A narrow Venetian canal recedes toward a domed basilica silhouetted against a blazing red sky, its reflection streaking the dark water below. Along the left bank, small figures cluster around glowing lantern light near moored boats and shuttered buildings, while the water carries broken streaks of gold, pink and orange from the sky above.

The sky is worked in dense, smoky reds and oranges applied with a loaded brush, thinning to pale mist at the top edge, while the basilica's dome and facade are picked out in cooler, muted grey-white. Reflections on the canal are dragged into long vertical streaks, and the overall effect is one of heat, spectacle and hushed anticipation.
