About this work
A slender canal recedes between weathered building walls draped with hanging greenery. A small boat with a figure seated at its stern is moored to the left, while the water ahead opens into a bright patch of sunlight framed by darker facades on either side.
Thick palette-knife impasto builds the foliage and stone in greens, ochres, and touches of violet, while the water below carries fractured turquoise and gold reflections. The heavy, textured brushwork and glowing central light give the narrow passage a hushed, secluded atmosphere.
