About this work
The composition frames a Venetian canal through an open window hung with heavy green-and-gold curtains, with pastel palazzi and a gondolier receding into the distance. On the marble sill sits a carnival still life: a white mask, a plumed jester's cap, a wine glass, stacked books, a tambourine, a wooden flute, dice and a rosary, with a small mask hanging from the curtain.
Cool blue-green tones of the canal contrast with the warm reds, golds and creams of the carnival objects, under even, clear daylight.
