About this work
A quiet canal cuts through a row of aged buildings with peeling stucco, green shutters, wrought-iron balconies and potted plants on the sills. A stone footbridge crosses the water in the middle distance, and three small boats - one white, one dark green, one blue - are moored along the banks beneath it.
Muted rose, ochre and grey-green tones are laid in flat gouache washes, with the architecture's verticals softened by a hazy, overcast sky. The still canal doubles the buildings and bridge in a blurred reflection, giving the scene a quiet, subdued stillness.
