About this work
A steep, dark-roofed stone house rises at the center of a paved village square, flanked by lower buildings with striped awnings and a white canopy sheltering an outdoor cafe table. Small figures in red and yellow move about below it, and a wooden bench sits empty in shadow at the lower left. The square's pale stone floor stretches forward, broken by long, cool cast shadows.
Quick, loaded strokes build a bright, sun-bleached palette of cream, ochre, and slate blue, the shadows cool violet-grey. Thick dabs of white and color mark the awnings and figures, while the foreground pavement is laid in broad, dragged passes of paint. The strong midday light and direct handling give the square a bright, sunlit calm.
