About this work

Three low wooden houses with pitched, snow-covered roofs line the far side of a street, separated by rough plank and picket fences. Bare trees, including a slender birch, punctuate the empty snowy yard in the foreground, where a discarded sledge or plough handle lies half-buried in the snow; no figures interrupt the stillness.

The palette is built from soft greys, ochre and muted greens against expanses of white and pale blue snow shadow. Loose, dabbed brushstrokes describe the crusted snow and weathered wood, and the flat winter light gives the modest street a hushed, wintry serenity.
