About this work

A bleached human skull, turned to show its profile and empty eye sockets, lies on a plain white cloth that fills the lower third of the composition. Behind it a deep black field occupies most of the canvas, broken only by a short line of red lettering in a non-Latin script set high in the upper right corner.

The skull is modeled in ochre, olive and ivory tones built up with visible knife and brush strokes, catching a soft raking light that models its ridges and cavities against the surrounding darkness. The stark contrast between the pale bone, white cloth and near-black ground gives the still life a somber, meditative mood.
