About this work
The canvas is almost entirely filled by a dark maroon-brown surface built from loose vertical strokes, like a heavy curtain or wall. Only at the base does a small pale, rounded shape — the crown of a mask seen from within — catch a thin band of light on a narrow ledge, with faint white flecks scattered beside it.
Executed in oil on canvas, the palette stays almost monochrome, built from close reds and browns with one cool, pale accent at the base. Long dragged brushstrokes leave the upper field textured, while the small lit shape is painted more smoothly. The imbalance between empty darkness and a single illuminated form gives the picture a hushed, brooding stillness.
