About this work

A dirt path dusted with frost runs from the lower right corner and bends left into a misty distance, bordered by tangled leafless bushes and dry grasses on both sides. The vegetation thickens into dark, undifferentiated masses of branches at the right, while pale fog swallows the path and trees ahead, leaving only faint silhouettes visible.

The palette is reduced almost to monochrome, built from layered greys, browns and whites with only a few strokes of ochre in the frozen grass. Soft, hazy edges throughout and a loss of detail in the distance create a damp, still atmosphere, painted with restrained, tonal, quietly melancholic brushwork.
