About this work
Dozens of arched church facades, rose windows, domes and spires are stacked and fused together into one towering, tapered mass that fills almost the entire canvas, set against a bare pale ground. The individual buildings lose their separate identity, blending into a single organic silhouette suggesting a mountain, a beehive, or an ancient citadel built entirely of sacred architecture.
The whole surface is painted in saturated, textured reds and oranges, deepening from pale rose at the crown to near-black crimson at the base, with sparing pale highlights picking out individual windows and arches. The heavily worked, grainy paint surface and stark monochrome palette give the imaginary structure a fantastical, otherworldly presence.
