About this work
Two women are shown half-length behind a patterned green-and-cream table edge. The one on the left wears a purple dress and holds a long pearl necklace. The one on the right, in an olive dress patterned with pink flowers and a white ruffled collar, wears a pendant and bracelets. Between them on the table rests a small articulated skeleton of a long-necked bird, which both women steady with their hands.
The figures are painted with smooth, controlled modeling against a flat pale blue backdrop, faces lit evenly. Cool background contrasts with the warmer purples, oranges, and browns of hair and clothing. The incongruous bird skeleton set among jewelry gives the double portrait an odd, unsettling note.
