About this work
A weathered antechamber with peeling walls, exposed lath and scratched plaster fills the foreground, its door propped open with a wedge. Through the doorway a dim room reveals Velazquez's court scene: a young infanta in a pale wide gown, kneeling attendants, a mastiff on the floor, a painter at his easel, and figures glimpsed in a lit doorway beyond.
The near room is grey and ochre, its surfaces scratched to suggest age and neglect, while the inner scene keeps the muted browns and candlelit highlights of the original. The contrast between rough decay and a hushed, glowing tableau creates an uncanny, dreamlike layering of two eras.
