About this work
The foreground is built from overlapping wooden and tin rooftops in reds, blues and ochres, opening onto a wide, water-filled drainage channel with muddy banks where several cows graze and a man walks with a dog. Beyond the channel stretches the village of Khuzhir, its houses roofed in turquoise, red and blue metal sheeting under a low, overcast sky, with utility poles and scattered yards and fences threading through the settlement.
Paint is applied in confident, squared-off strokes using a varied palette of ochre, teal, rust and olive green, giving the corrugated roofs and dirt tracks a textured surface despite the grey light above. The high, oblique viewpoint and layered planes of rooftops, water and houses create an unpretentious, documentary view of everyday village life, calm and matter-of-fact in feeling.
