About this work
Two figures merge into a single dark silhouette as they sit pressed together on a bench with yellow horizontal slats. One wears a blue garment patterned with small pink flowers that spills over the seat; the other's head, tinged reddish-pink, leans close beside it. Little of either face is legible beyond the general shapes of hair and shoulders.
The scene is dominated by near-black paint across the upper two-thirds of the canvas, broken only by pale, scratched squiggles that read as loose calligraphic marks rather than a legible object. Below, the ground turns to a warm burnt-orange, against which the yellow-striped bench glows. Thick, smudged strokes and incised lines build a hushed, nocturnal, almost secretive mood.
