About this work
A man stands half-length against an almost solid black background, his gaze lowered in concentration as he holds a wooden control bar strung with fine threads. Below him, at the lower edge of the tall canvas, a small jointed wooden marionette figure hangs from the strings in a walking pose, its head, torso and articulated limbs rendered as simple carved forms.
The figure is painted in loose, economical strokes, the man's tan jacket patched by bright touches of red and blue standing out against the enveloping darkness and his black waistcoat. Strong tonal contrast and the taper of the strings draw the eye down to the puppet, creating a tense, quietly mysterious atmosphere.
