About this work
Four wooden crossbar marionette controls hang from hooks at the very top of the canvas, their strings trailing down into a dark void with no hands or puppeteers in sight. Below, disconnected from the controls above, four jointed wooden puppet figures stand on an empty floor, two with pale featureless heads and two in warmer tan tones, facing in different directions as if moving on their own.
The canvas is dominated by flat, deep black, broken only by the warm ochre and umber tones of the wooden figures and their hanging strings. Smooth, restrained brushwork and the absence of any controlling hand turn the marionette motif into something quietly eerie, self-directed and mysterious.
