About this work
Clusters of lilac flowers in shades of violet, mauve and white overflow from an unseen vase, filling nearly the entire canvas with layered panicles of tiny blossoms. Touches of green leaves and stems show through near the base, while the flower heads press outward toward the edges of the frame.
Thick, dabbed strokes of purple, lavender and white are built up with a loaded brush or knife, giving the blossoms a raised, textured surface. A soft, neutral grey background sets off the saturated color of the flowers without competing for attention. The heavy impasto and fresh, cool-toned palette give the still life a lively, immediate feel.
