About this work
A carved wooden frame with rosettes and cross-hatched borders divides the panel into three arched scenes. At center, a woman with loose red hair reaches into a tangle of blue and purple wildflowers and vines. At left, a robed, hooded figure bends over blossoms; at right, a bare-chested youth stands among foliage above a reclining figure beside a trickle of water, with a seated figure below and distant rooftops beyond the greenery.
Deep green, violet and white foliage dominates the palette, laid in loose, dabbed strokes that thicken into knots of impasto blossom, while the carved frame is toned honey-brown to match the woodland key. Light falls unevenly across the scenes, brightening the flowers and darkening the figures toward silhouette, lending the whole a folkloric mystery.
