About this work
A tall old building with a stepped rooftop parapet fills most of the sheet, its facade in deep shadow apart from a few small windows glowing warm yellow. Two low archways sit at street level, one lit pale green, the other reddish. Dense, dark foliage or vines seem to climb the lower walls, and a bare tree stands at the left edge.
The whole sheet is washed in warm sepia and ochre tones, with the building's mass built up through pooled, overlapping dark washes that leave the paper's warm ground glowing through in places. Loose, wet-in-wet brushwork blurs the architectural edges, and the scattered points of light create a hushed, mysterious nocturnal atmosphere.
