About this work
Two young men grapple with a horned animal, decked in ribbons, tassels and cloth, that has gone down in the trampled snow; one bends over its head in a red shirt while the other, in grey-blue, pulls a rope. Around them a crowd in heavy fur coats and kerchiefs reacts with laughter and open-mouthed shouts, with brightly dressed children visible at the right.
Cool white and grey snow dominates, set against the deep browns and blacks of winter coats and the crimson and gold ribbons on the animal. Loose, energetic brushwork and flecks of spattered white paint capture the trampled ground and swirling motion, giving the scene a lively, boisterous winter atmosphere.
