About this work

A young woman with short reddish-brown hair sits low in an armchair, legs stretched out and crossed at the ankle, dressed in a pale top and dark trousers. Her head tilts down and to one side in a relaxed, private pose, and a small red object rests near her foot. The surrounding room dissolves into loosely blocked patches of color, giving little sense of specific setting.

The surface is built from thick, blocky impasto in cool greys, blues and warm flesh tones. Light picks out the face and torso against a darker, fractured backdrop, and the vigorous, textured brushwork verges on abstraction. The overall effect is quiet and introspective, with a faintly melancholic stillness.
