About this work
Along a wide, low shoreline, an elderly man in a cap and heavy coat walks among several dark wooden rowboats pulled up on the stones, oars and ropes lying loose inside them. A small pier and shed stand at the water's edge on the far left, under a low horizon and rolling grey clouds.
Painted in deep teal, charcoal and sandy ochre, broad confident strokes model the boat hulls and rippling water. Soft, even light from the overcast sky flattens shadows, lending the realistic scene a quiet, wistful, end-of-season melancholy.
