About this work
Trees in full white blossom line both banks of a narrow canal, their branches arching over the water with a small bridge visible at left. Ochre and red-brick buildings with tiled roofs stand along the far bank, and their forms, together with the blossoming canopy, dissolve into rippling reflections across the canal's dark surface.
Thick, heavily loaded strokes of white, lilac and grey build the blossoms into an almost sculptural mass against a pale sky, while the water is worked in the same impasto with darker, mirrored tones. The dense, textured surface and elevated vantage point give the small canvas a vibrant, springtime energy.
