About this work
A crowd of men in elaborate fur hats and gold-trimmed robes gathers around a massive bell hoisted on ropes through a timber scaffold. At center a bearded man in white-and-gold vestments marked with a cross stands beside a robed dignitary, both facing an official in a tall hat. A horse and rider wait at the left, and inscribed Church Slavonic lettering runs along the bell's rim.
Deep shadow fills the scaffold and background, while raking light picks out gold brocade, white fur and flushed faces, giving the scene a warm, low, theatrical glow. Rich reds and ochres dominate the costumes against dark timber and stone, and the crowded, solemn gathering carries a weighty, ceremonial gravity.
