About this work
A pale nude woman lies twisted across white and crimson silk, head thrown back and one hand reached up toward the muzzle of an enormous black bull emerging from the shadows behind her. Her legs draw up and cross, red and white drapery bunched beneath her bare feet, while the bull's horned head and dark eye loom close at the upper left of the canvas.
Deep blacks and browns dominate the ground, broken by saturated red silk and the warm ochre glow of skin picked out by raking light. Brushwork stays smooth and tightly blended on the figure, contrasting with looser, shadowed handling of the bull, producing a tense, theatrical chiaroscuro charged with erotic tension and impending threat.
