About this work
A pale young woman in a crimson-and-gold gown holds a split pomegranate to her mouth, meeting the viewer's gaze. Beside her a stemmed goblet bears a whole pomegranate and a small blossom, set against a densely patterned tapestry-like backdrop.
Rendered in warm ochres, rust reds and ivory, the surface is built up with intricate raised patterning—brocade, lace, and mosaic-like texture—so the whole picture reads almost like embroidered fabric. Soft, diffused light models the face gently while the background dissolves into ornament, giving the scene a hushed, dreamlike stillness.
