About this work
A contorted human figure fills the canvas, its face turned in profile with a visible eye, nose and mouth, hair rendered in streaks of teal and rust. The body twists downward in pink and mauve tones, limbs crossing near the base, set against horizontal bands of yellow and pale pink, with painted words and scratched letters scattered along the top edge.
Built up in thick impasto with a palette knife, the surface is scored and incised while still wet, exposing layers of color beneath. Ochre, rose and dark umber are applied in raw, unblended strokes over the striped ground, creating a coarse, encrusted texture. The effect is agitated and charged, full of restless, unresolved movement.
