About this work
A narrow sloping street cuts through a cluster of houses with mismatched tiled and metal roofs in pink, red and ochre tones. Whitewashed walls at right catch strong sunlight, while a telephone pole and crossing wires stand out against the sky. Layered green hillside and a pale mountain silhouette rise behind the rooftops in the distance.
Bright ochres, whites and greens are set against cool blue-gray mountains and sky, applied with loose, confident brushstrokes and palette-knife texture that suggest sun-baked walls and foliage without fine detail. Strong contrasts of light and shadow along the street give a lively, plein-air impression of a hot midday hour in a hillside village.
