About this work
A luminous yellow-orange sphere, textured like a segmented fruit, balances on a pale green stem rising from dark water. Two clawed, spotted salamanders climb the stem from either side, surrounded by water lilies, lily pads and a red plant with drooping seed pods in a shallow pond.
Cool blues and greens fill the water and foliage, set against the warm glow of the central sphere for strong light-dark contrast. Loose, textured strokes and scratched surface marks on the salamanders and stem give the scene a fantastical, otherworldly quality rather than a naturalistic pond view.
