About this work
A barefoot boy in patched clothes stands stiffly on a wooden porch, his face streaked with tears. Beside him a young barefoot woman in a red blouse and white headscarf carries an infant, stepping from a dark doorway. Through a window at left, a soldier with a rifle walks away along a path under a stormy sky.
Deep shadow fills the log-cabin wall and the boy's clothing, while warm light falls across the woman and child, isolating them in the doorway. Muted browns and olive greens dominate, broken by the woman's red blouse. The hushed, grieving expressions and quiet composition create a somber mood of wartime separation.
