About this work

On a light tablecloth stand a dark blue glass bottle and matching jug, a shallow bowl heaped with dark grapes and pale fruit, a glass of amber liquid, and a white teapot painted with pink roses; loose cherries and apples lie scattered in front. A bouquet of pink, yellow and violet flowers rises behind the vessels, with village houses and blue-green hills visible in the distance.

Cool blues of the glassware play against warm ochres of the fruit and bouquet, applied in loose, chunky strokes typical of an outdoor sketch. Bright, even light picks out reflections on the glass and porcelain, and the wide rural backdrop gives the still life an airy, unhurried summer character.
