About this work
Within a large arched frame overgrown with green foliage, pink roses and pomegranates, two women in pale gowns patterned with lilies and architectural motifs stand holding small lanterns. Numerous small songbirds — goldfinches, a kingfisher, bluebirds — perch and fly among the branches, while a third profile of a woman's head repeats faintly at the edges of the composition.
A soft, decorative palette of greens, pinks, cream and touches of gold leaf is applied in flat, even strokes with fine linear detail on the birds' plumage and dress patterns. The doubled faces, ornamental border and gilded accents give the composition a dreamy, storybook-like, gently mysterious quality.
