About this work
Three young women in ballet costume stand close together in a dim backstage area, one turned away from the viewer in a puffed yellow-orange bodice, reaching up to adjust a red bow in her upswept hair. A fourth figure, a boy or young man, looks on from behind. Around them, glimpses of other costumed figures and dark stage wings recede into shadow.
The composition is built from warm oranges, ochres, and touches of green and red against a nearly black ground, with quick, broken brushstrokes that catch the glow of stage lighting on skin and fabric. The loose handling and cropped, informal grouping give the scene the immediacy of a candid backstage moment among young dancers.
