About this work

Heavy waves roll and break in the foreground, throwing white foam against the stone piers of a low viaduct at right and toward a distant cable-stayed bridge spanning the water. Turbulent clouds fill the upper half of the sky, breaking apart to let pale golden light spill down onto the churning sea.

Water is worked in dense strokes of olive, slate and white foam, with a loaded brush used to build up the crash and spray at the pier. The sky's smoky browns and golds are blended more softly above, and the contrast between rough, textured sea and hazy sky gives the scene a heavy, turbulent drama.
