About this work
A pale, angel-like figure in a flowing white robe reclines at the bottom of the composition, bowing a violin. Above and around it, a flattened, patterned still life fills the canvas: a blue bowl of oranges and a pear, tall ceramic jugs, a lamp, a small doll figure and a fan-shaped ornament, all set against a striped and patterned backdrop.
Cool turquoise and teal dominate the whole surface, broken by warm orange fruit and cream highlights, unified by a mottled, textured ground. Flattened cubist forms and overlapping decorative patterns give the scene a playful, musical, dreamlike rhythm.
