About this work
An old kerosene lamp stands beside a wide copper vessel filled with dried grasses and wildflowers, a dark wine bottle, and a white enamel mug. In the foreground, an apple and two pears rest on a rumpled blue cloth, while a page of newspaper is pinned to the wall behind, its print half-legible.
Warm browns, coppers and deep shadows dominate, broken by the cool blue of the cloth and the pale patch of newspaper catching the light. Thick, confident brushstrokes model the metal and fruit with visible impasto, giving the arrangement a dim, quiet, contemplative interior mood.
