About this work
A cluster of small pumpkins and gourds, some smooth and squat, one elongated with a curling stem, is arranged on a white cloth striped with thin black lines. The cloth drapes over the edge of a table, and the gourds vary in shape, size and shades of orange, green and cream.
A single strong light source models each gourd with careful highlights and soft shadows against the flat black backdrop, giving a classical still-life clarity. The smooth, tightly blended brushwork and warm orange tones against deep black produce a calm, contemplative hush.
