About this work
A pale theatrical mask rests among a bouquet of blush and white peonies in a hand-painted ceramic vase, beside an open yellow fan with a red-and-gold design. On the pink cloth before it lie a round mirror, a perfume bottle, a strand of pearls, an embroidered pouch, and scissors, against a deep plum curtain.
Loose, confident brushstrokes build the peonies in thick dabs of white, pink and green, while the fan's pleats are rendered in warm ochre streaks that echo the mauve backdrop. Warm pinks and purples dominate, lit from the upper right so the mask's pale surface glows against shadowed fabric, giving the crowded still life a decorative, theatrical warmth.
