About this work
Three small vessels -- an ochre-yellow goblet, a dark slate-blue bowl and a pale cream urn -- rest directly on the ground at the foot of a single, sparsely leafed tree. The tree's slender trunk rises through the centre of the composition, its rounded canopy set against a plain grey-blue sky above a flat green field stretching to the horizon.
Paint is laid on thickly with a palette knife, giving the vessels, tree and field a rough, ridged surface throughout. Colour is kept muted -- ochre, slate, cream and olive-green -- with no sharp contrasts, so foreground objects and background landscape sit in the same soft, weathered register. The heavy, uniform texture and restrained palette give the small scene a calm, grounded stillness.
