About this work

A single starfish lies on pale sand, its spine-covered arms curling and overlapping into a knotted, almost floral shape. Small white tubercles stud its brown-and-cream surface, and one arm bends sharply upward while the others coil beneath the body. A soft blue-grey shadow stretches out to one side across the otherwise bare sand.

Fine stippled brushwork builds the mottled texture of the arms, rows of tiny raised dots picked out in white against warm ochre and umber tones. Cool light falls from the upper left, sharpening the creature's ridges and casting a long, precise shadow. The close, isolated view gives the study a quiet, almost scientific attention to detail.
